Whether you're a seasoned yogi looking to expand your practice, a movement enthusiast, or a complete novice intrigued by the idea of combining yoga with acrobatics, this practice is suitable for absolutely anyone. Which emphasizes trust, communication, and connection with your partner, while developing your physical strength, mobility, coordination and balance.

What is Acro Yoga?

Acro yoga involves two or more people working together to perform yoga poses that include elements of balance, strength, and flexibility. There are typically three roles in acro yoga:

  • Base: The person who remains in contact with the ground, providing a stable foundation for the flyer.

  • Flyer: The person who is lifted off the ground by the base, maintaining balance and engaging core strength.

  • Spotter: The individual(s) who ensures safety by providing support and guidance to both the base and the flyer.

Getting Started

Finding a Partner:

Finding a compatible partner is crucial for a safe and enjoyable acro yoga experience. Ideally, partners should have some understanding of key acro techniques and use clear communication to build trust and maintain safety.

Safety Guidelines:

Safety is paramount in Acro Yoga. Here are some essential guidelines to follow:

  • Warm-Up: Always start with a thorough warm-up to prepare your muscles and joints for the physical demands of Acro Yoga.

  • Clear Communication: Establish clear communication with your partner(s) before and during each pose. Use verbal cues and hand signals to indicate comfort level, adjustments needed, and say “down” when you’re ready to come out of a pose or before falling out if you’re bailing from a skill.

  • Start Low and Slow: Begin with basic poses close to the ground before progressing to more challenging moves like standing skill or dynamic skills. This allows you to build strength, coordination, and confidence gradually.

  • Spotter: Always have a spotter present, especially when trying new poses or advancing to higher levels. The spotter's role is to assist in balance, offer support, and ensure safety in case of a fall.

  • Listen to Your Body: Honor your body's limits and avoid pushing yourself or your partner beyond what feels safe and comfortable. Regular communication and mindfulness will help prevent injuries.
